Many love stories we hear end with a tragic death, but death does not necessarily mean the end of the story. Such is the tale of Mae Nak, as depicted in the horror film Nang Nak which was released in 1999, and the latest series, Mae Nak, was released in 2012. It is based on a famous folk tale, Mae Nak Phra Khanong, which means Miss Nak of Phra Khanong District. In a romantic tragedy and horror film, it is said that the spirit of the lovelorn Mae Nak continues to call out for her husband as she walks the plains of a separate dimension.
Pee Mak Synopsis During the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, many Thai men were drafted to serve in the war. "Pee Mak" or "Mak" (Mario Maurer) was no exception and had to leave his pregnant wife to join the fight. While at war, he met, saved, and formed a close bond with four fellow soldiers: "Ter" (Freud-Nattapong Chartpong), "Puak" (Pongsathorn Jongwilas), "Shin" (Auttarut Kongrasri), and "Aey" (Kantapat Permpoonpatcharasook) (The 4 main cast from Phobia 2 Episode "In The End") Once the war was over, Mak invited his four best friends to visit his home at a town called Phra Khanong. When they arrived to Phra Khanong, Mak introduced them to his beautiful wife "Nak" (Davika Hoorne) and "Dang" his newborn baby boy. Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey decided to stay in Phra Khanong for a while and moved into the old house across from Mak's house. Despite having met Nak and Dang, a village rumor was going around that Nak had died giving birth to her stillborn baby, Dang. It turns out that Auntie Priak, owner of the local liquor shop, was the source of the town rumor. This was completely absurd to Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey. The four friends refused to believe this to be true and were determined to prove the rumors wrong. Aunty Priak was found dead a few days later, her body floating along the river. Up until this point Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey had never considered the possibility that Nak and her baby could be dead and now lingered on as haunting ghosts. Initially, the four friends didn't dare tell Mak about their suspicions because they were afraid that they would end up just like Aunty Priak. It didn't take long before their conscience caught up with them and they realized they owed Mak the truth since he had once saved all of their lives. Now they must risk their own lives to somehow convey to Mak that the living and dead shouldn't coexist together. In the end, it will be up to Pee Mak to choose between love and reality.

Mae Nak Phra Khanong (Thai: meaning 'Lady Nak of Phra Khanong'), or simply Mae Nak (Thai: 'Lady Nak') or Nang Nak (Thai: 'Miss Nak'), is a well-known Thai female ghost. According to local folklore the story is based on events that took place during the reign of King Rama IV. In the story, Pee Mak (Nak's husband) goes off to battle. Pregnant Nak dies in labour while he is away. Filled with love, she stays at home, with the baby, waiting for Pee Mak to come back. When he returns, she pretends to still be alive. The story is about a beautiful young woman named Nak, who lived on the banks of the Phra Khanong Canal, and her undying love for her husband, Mak. With Nak pregnant, Mak is conscripted and sent to war (in some versions of the story the war is against the Shan tribe, while others are not specific), where he is seriously wounded. While he is being nursed back to health in central Bangkok, Nak and their child both die during a difficult childbirth. When Mak returns home, however, he finds his loving wife and child waiting for him. Neighbors who try to warn him that he is living with a ghost are all killed. One day, as Nak is preparing nam phrik, she drops a lime off the porch. In her haste to retrieve it, she stretches her arm to pick it up from the ground below. Mak sees it and at last realizes his wife is a ghost. Terrified, he tries to find a way to flee without alarming her. That night, Mak says he has to go downstairs to urinate. He then runs away into the night. Discovering her husband has fled, Nak pursues him. Mak sees her and conceals himself behind a Blumea balsamifera (Thai: หนาด; pronounced Nat) bush.[3] According to folklore, ghosts are afraid of the sticky Blumea leaves. Mak then runs to Wat Mahabut temple, which a ghost cannot enter, as it is holy ground. In her grief, Nak terrorizes the people of Phra Khanong, furious at them for causing Mak to leave her. However, Nak's ghost is captured by a powerful exorcist. Confining her in an earthen jar, he throws it into the canal. There are differing versions of the rest of the story. In one, an old couple new to Phra Khanong finds the jar while fishing; in another two fishermen dredge up the jar. Nak is freed when they opened it. Nak is conquered again by the venerable monk Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi). The learned monk confines her spirit in the bone of her forehead and binds it in his waistband. Legend says the waistband is currently in the possession of the royal family. Admiral Aphakonkiattiwong, the Prince of Chumphon, also claimed to have had the relic.[4] In alternative version, the monk assured Nak that in a future life she would be reunited with her beloved husband, and thus she voluntarily departed for the afterlife. A shrine dedicated to Mae Nak is at Wat Mahabut. In 1997, the shrine relocated to nearby Suan Luang District of modern Bangkok.

Thailand’s Most Famous Ghost Love Story : Mae Nak Phra Khanong : Bangkok :Thailand 🇹🇭 Mae Nak Phra Khanong is among the best-known ghost stories in Thailand. A tale repeatedly told through various media, the legend of Mae Nak Phra Khanong strikes a chord with people to its universal theme of love and heartbreak. Believed to date back to the early Rattanakosin period, around the 18th century, the legend has it that Mae Nak lived in the area near Wat Mahabut along a canal. According to the fable, Nak’s husband Mak was conscripted and sent to war while she was pregnant. Nak died during child birth, making her a “Pee tai tang klom” who is ghost of a woman who died during childbirth with the baby still inside her. But because of love, Nak’s spirit was bound to her former life, re-appearing in human form to carry on daily chores at home. Every day she lingered on, waiting for her husband’s return. The terrified villagers invited monks and exorcists to banish her, but none succeeded. After being treated for the wounds he sustained at war, Mak came back to Phra Khanong. At home, he was greeted by his loving wife, now with a newborn. Mak was finally living happily ever after with his wife and child, or so he thought. One day while cooking, Nak accidentally dropped a lime from her porch. Reaching for the lime, she stretched her inhuman arm all the way from the second-floor balcony down to the grounds below. At that very moment, Mak returned home from running errands to witness the horrifying scene. He became so horrified that he fled to the nearby temple. Heartbroken and furious, Mae Nak set out on a spree of revenge, terrorizing people in the community for causing Mak to leave her. Eventually, the revered monk Somdej Toh, came to the people’s aid. He approached Nak’s spirit with calmness and pure compassion. With Somdej Toh’s guidance, Nak was able to let go of her past life and move on. The venerable father then cremated Nak’s body and carved out a piece of her forehead bone to keep as an amulet. The bone has since become a lost treasure with legendary status among Thai amulet collectors. We may never know whether the tale of Mae Nak Phra Khanong is based on a true story or not, but one thing is certain: nothing will ever stop the fondness Thais have for this love/horror tale.
