Azerbaijan forces engaged Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday, killing at least five people, according to authorities in the breakaway region. The foreign policy advisor to Azerbaijan’s president told Reuters that their forces had broken through a line of contact with Armenian forces after launching a military action in the region. Armenia denied it has any forces in the area, though in the past many Armenians have volunteered to fight for Nagorno-Karabakh. At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his support for Azerbaijan and said the imposition of another status the breakaway region “will never be accepted.” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to Azerbaijan’s action in the territory as “ethnic cleansing,” as protests were held in Yerevan against Azerbaijan. Armenians are protesting due to their government's handling of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Anti-government demonstrators have taken to the streets of the Armenian capital Yerevan for a third day to protest against the government's handling of the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh. Demonstrators say the government has made too many concessions to Azerbaijan and are demanding their Prime Minister resign. Ethnic Armenian separatists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region agreed to dismantle their forces on Thursday, following a 24 hour military offensive by Azerbaijan. The UN is calling for more dialogue between ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan after the first round of talks ended without agreement. Both parties traded accusations at an urgent UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. The Armenian side said Azerbaijani forces had violated a ceasefire, while Azerbaijan insisted Armenia was peddling disinformation to the international community. The 20th century had no shortage of terrible events that cast a shadow over people today. The deaths of over a million Armenians is one such tragedy. Few tragedies have faced such bitter political discussion after the fact as the Armenian Incident. , others deny it ever happened, insist it was an accident, or that it was a justified response to a political threat. In this video, we look at the unspeakable things that happened in the Armenian Incident and how its complicated legacy is still hotly debated today. If you appreciate these videos, leave a like to show your support and subscribe to A Day In History for more content like this. Setting the Stage Nestled in the Caucasus Mountains on the border between Europe and Asia, Armenia’s long history has seen it caught between countless empires. By the late 19th century, Western Armenia was firmly under the control of the Ottoman Empire while a smaller Eastern portion was controlled by the Russians. The Armenians of the Ottoman Empire faced many obstacles. As a Christian minority in a Muslim-majority Empire, they were subject to legal discrimination and higher taxes. Over time, racial ideologies that privileged ethnic Turks opened new opportunities for anti-Armenian discrimination. Another significant obstacle was their role as a middleman minority. A middleman minority is an ethnic group that is overrepresented in occupations like bankers, merchants, and bureaucrats relative to their small overall population. Other middleman minorities around the world included the Chinese in Southeast Asia, the Gujaratis in India, and most famously the Jews in Europe and the United States. Although only a small percentage of Armenians worked in these lucrative jobs, all Armenians were subject to discrimination that described them as parasites, thieves, and leeches who were stealing the wealth of the rest of the population. This caused outbreaks of violence and persecution throughout the late 19th century. The Ottoman government regularly seized Armenian land to redistribute to Muslim and Kurdish settlers and the Kurdish Hamidian regiments were given free reign to raid Armenian villages as part of their resettlement. Despite attempts to muster international support, the Armenians were left to defend themselves and formed a number of impromptu militia groups to defend their towns, but the Ottoman authorities interpreted this as a sign of rebellion and cracked down hard in the 1890s. #armenian #history #worldwar1 #ottoman #armenianhistory Sources: 🤍 Music: Motionarray.com & Epidemic Music DISCLAIMER: All materials in these videos are used for entertainment purposes and fall within the guidelines of fair use. Arek Kahkedjian tour guide native to the old city of Jerusalem Arekov🤍hotmail.com After five years of renovation and nearly 30 years of closure, the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem has reopened the "Edward and Helen Mardigian" Museum. An opening ceremony was held on Oct. 23 at the Museum's premises in the Armenian Quarter in Jerusalem's Old City. The opening ceremony was attended by the Patriarch of the Armenian Orthodox Church of Jerusalem, Jordan and the Holy Land, Nourhan Manougian, several dignitaries and diplomatic representatives, and the Vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land, Br. Ibrahim Faltas. The Patriarch thanked the Mardigian family for their generous donation that enabled first the foundation and then the restoration of the museum. TZOGHIG KARAKASHIAN Museum director "One of the most important features of the museum's restoration is this mosaic floor that was found in the Musrara neighborhood of Jerusalem by digging under a house. It came from an Armenian church dating back to the 6th century. More recently, it was transferred here as it belonged to the Armenians." The mosaic, found in 1894, is decorated with vine shoots, the tree of life, and contains various birds. As the Armenian-language inscription reads, the mosaic is dedicated to the "memory and salvation of all Armenians whose names God knows." A French team specialized in museum design created the new roofing for the inner courtyard, which is often prone to flooding in rainy weather. ANTOINE FRANCIS YADI Architect - Jerusalem "The thing that has developed in the building is the roof, which was not included in the design, for thermal and acoustic insulation." The renovation of the museum involved rebuilding the entire electrical and mechanical infrastructure. Intelligent systems for temperature control, lighting and surveillance were introduced. The exhibition itinerary was also reorganized to tell the story of the Armenian presence in the Holy Land. Two historians collaborated on the content. TZOGHIG KARAKASHIAN Museum director "The upper floor of the museum preserves the memory of the Armenian orphans who came to the Holy Land in 1915 through Deir el-Zor. Until recently, 18,000 Armenians lived here, including 650 orphans, whose names and dates of birth are all documented." The museum's collections were formed largely from gifts brought by Armenian pilgrims who visited the Holy Land between the 17th and 18th centuries. The Armenian presence has been strongly present in the Holy Land throughout history. TZOGHIG KARAKASHIAN Museum director "On the first floor we find the story of the history of Armenians before the birth of Christ to the present day. We Armenians came here with the emperor of Armenia, Tigrane the Great in the first century B.C." Melisenda, daughter of an Armenian princess, was the first queen of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. During her reign many churches were built in the Holy Land. The Armenian Genocide was the most important event in Armenian history in the modern era. TZOGHIG KARAKASHIAN Museum director "Those who forget the past do not renew the present. We teach every child about genocide. My daughter is 20 years old and knows the history of the genocide and who our family members killed there are. From mid-November, everyone will be able to learn more about the history of the Armenian presence and its heritage in the Holy Land by visiting the "Edward and Helen Mardigian" Museum.
