EXPLORING FRANCE: Alsace Region - Eguisheim, Colmar, Kaysersberg, Colmar & Strasbourg. Discover the beauty of the Alsace Wine region and find out the top 5 towns to visit when in the Alsace in France. Now named the Grand Est Region in Northeastern France which borders Germany and Switzerland, the Alsace Region has some of Europe's most beautiful towns. For wine lovers, the popular Alsace Wine Route and many wineries house the best white wines in the WORLD. From Reisling wines to Pino Grig, there is plenty of vineyards to visit! We start with Eguisheim and it's beautiful old town and castles then head to Colmar for lunch near the le petit venice canal. After lunch we visit Kaysersberg which has plenty of German influences and has some of the best wineries in the region. Before sunset we visit one of the most beautiful towns in France in Riquewihr that inspired Belle's town in the movie Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Other towns we did not mention on the list are Ribeauville and Obernai. Finally we end up in Strasbourg, the regions largest city for some dinner at a vietnamese restaurant! Alsace is the Germanic region of France. It is a region lying on the west bank of the river Rhine, between the Rhine and the Vosges mountains. To the north and east it shares a border with Germany; to the south with German-speaking Switzerland, and to the west with Lorraine and Franche Comté. Historically speaking, Alsace was part of the German-speaking area of central Europe, and to this day a large proportion of the population, of all generations, speak or understand Alsacian, a dialectal form of German closely resembling the German spoken in Switzerland. In the last two centuries, Alsace has passed from Germany to France and back , and back again; consequently, it is a region that was not part of France at the time of the makings of the modern-day nation, and has held on to a number of institutional differences, particularly concerning religious affairs. For example, Good Friday is a public holiday in Alsace, but not in the rest of France; and in Alsace, priests are paid by the state. The Alsace region of France is a fairy tale land paradise. Half-timbered architecture is unique to this area of France and it's a result of French and German cultures combined. Two of my favorite areas: La Petite France STRASBOURG and La Petite Venise in Colmar really show off that Fairy Tale Land charm. Numerous villages along The Wine Roads of Alsace (La Route des vins d'Alsace) provided a non-stop fairy tale experience. Our favorite accomodations: Le Bouclier d'Or in Strasbourg and Le Parc Hôtel Obernai & Yonaguni Spa. We absolutely enjoyed the Batorama Strasbourg. Our favorite villages along the wine route: Molsheim, Obernai, Bergheim, Ribeauville, Riquewihr, & Colmar. We also visited Buxy, Sercy, and Lyon. This concludes a 24-day Road Trip from Nice, France to Lyon, France. I have named it The Route LyonNice, like a Lyonnaise salad. Strasbourg has a long and fascinating history. The city was first settled by the Celts in the 4th century BC. It then became a Roman city, and it was later conquered by the Franks in the 5th century AD. Strasbourg played an important role in the Middle Ages, and it was an important center of trade and culture. The city reached its peak in the 14th century, and it was then ruled by the Holy Roman Emperor. Strasbourg experienced a decline in the 17th century, but it began to recover in the 18th century. The city became a part of France in 1681, and it played an important role in the French Revolution. Strasbourg is now a major center of culture, education, and industry. Today, it is one of France's cultural centers, known for its famous Christmas Market. OBERNAI: A LITTLE HISTORY... Sainte Odile in ObernaiRoman crossroads, then Merovingian royal villa, “Ehenheim” was mentioned for the first time in 778, and named Oberehnheim in 1242 to distinguish itself from Niederehnheim (Niedernai). It is assumed that the city was the property of the Dukes of Alsace and then of the monasteries of Hohenbourg (now Mont Sainte-Odile) and Niedermunster, the two convents founded by Sainte Odile and her father. OBERNAI, IMPERIAL CITY Around 1240, Obernai freed itself from monastic tutelage to attain, with the support of the Hohenstaufen, the rank of town: which enabled it to erect fortifications, to be endowed with its own judicial and fiscal organization, and to hold a market and fairs. In 1354, Obernai and the nine other imperial cities of Alsace, Wissembourg, Haguenau, Rosheim, Sélestat, Kaysersberg, Colmar, Turckheim, Munster and Mulhouse, joined forces to found the Decapolis. The municipal organization is set up with two priorities: to free the city from the authority of the provost (delegate of the Emperor) and to neutralize the influence of the many nobles of the city. The 16th century marked the golden age of the Obern boom. Crafts and viticulture (export) are prosperous. The Renaissance will leave its architectural imprint, among others, on the Town Hall (1523 and 1610), the Halle aux Blés (1554), the Belfry - Kapellturm and the Well with Six Buckets (1579). While the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) ravaged the region, the city was occupied and held to ransom. Following our day in Strasbourg (🤍 we spend a day in the beautiful town of Colmar. We visited Little Venice, out of a movie, and walk around the wonderful cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered medieval and early Renaissance buildings.
